Just curious - they are down again (nothing new), but this time it's not just the multi-user VRML server. What's new this time is that their entire public presence on the Internet has been gone for about a week. As this is highly unusualy for any business, much less one that revolves around technology, web content, and the Internet, I'm assuming they were not able to pay their bills.

Bitmanagement and Cybertown are up - so the financial failing appears to be limited to Blaxxun AG.

Anyone know for sure what's going on?

I imagine the developer server will come back up eventually because I think it is run by a Bitmanagment employee as a hobby. Bitmanagment is a completely seperate company from blaxxun.
Meanwhile ever hear of Abnet?

*sigh*

Ok .. from where I sit - Blaxxun.com is down - and that's the public website of the company. Is that not so?

If that's true, it's a bit more than a hobby. You'd think it is a corporation that employs some number of employees and is a going concern.

And for that matter - if it's just a hobby, being down for a week means it's not much of a hobby, eh? Smile

Its not the company itself, as far as I can tell its just the webserver is broken again.

It happens to often, last outage being in december. Also takes too long for Blaxxun to notice and fix the problem. Usual method is to re-install the entire server from scratch.

To be honest I've stopped caring if the server works or not. So many people have left in disgust I don't think it matters anymore.

I agree, it's getting to be a ghost town in the outers nowadays. As Pyth said, there is ABNET but bear in mind you have to run BS Contact no later than 6.1 to use it.

Too bad none of those "employees" has the ability/will to fix the chat crash which is basically the root cause of blaxxun's demise huh?

On the one hand I understand your perspective, on the other blaxxun
the company is pretty much a hollow shell of marketers trying to sell a defective/obsolete product.
I am pretty sure that a Bitmanagement employee throws money blaxxun's way to keep the developer server going -as a hobby or rather his wife's hobby. So going with what Fabricator said then when the web server goes down so does the hobby. I'll bet Herm will back me up on this.

Just as a side note, people should take a look at what X and Peter have been quietly working on at http://www.cyberhenge.ca/

Not a complete answer, but pretty darned clever, IMHO

Sorry I have no other info than you guys too %{.

It looks like their webserver has a hangup (It don't gives a 404, but don't answers anway, however 'ping' and 'traceroute' still gives normal answers).
Might happen anybody of the bxx rest-guys have noticed yet?
Maybe a restart of the webserver might fix it:
Wake up guys, gimme a root-shell if you are unable to do that. Evil or Very Mad

Hello there! I just wanted everyone to know that 3D Planets ( http://3dplanets.com ) is accepting worlds from Outers creators for upload to the community. Although we can't replace the Outers we CAN give you a reliable location to have your world displayed that includes Reliable Java, HTML, and 3D chat plus all of the other benefits and features of the community.

We have created a new section in the comm similar to the 'burbs in CT and we DON'T have the restrictions that other communities do for member-uploaded worlds. We have two rules only, no outside linking and the world must be familiy-friendly. That's it. The creator retains 100% ownership and can have it removed or updated at any time.

Currently we have 8 worlds uploaded by Omind, Skippybrand, KellyJo, and Mykel_d.

3D Planets is a blaxxun-based community running a highly modified version of plaform 5.1 and we've been around since August 2003.

If you or anyone you know is looking for a place to park a world or if you would like further information then contact me at Deighv@3dplanets.com

BTW, our community is FREE and we currently have over 7200 members.

Who needs the Outers Wink

Hi Deighv, welcome to herm's board.

Thank you for reminding us of the one remaining Blaxxun community that is run by dedicated techs, rather than people armed with red tape Laughing

Afraid my attempts at getting a public bxx server run by someone have failed. I know how to configure it so it disables all the login stuff, and functions just like the real outers.

Nevermind things have moved on since Blaxxun started outers, its more a place with out an owner. I guess that is part of the appeal.

Oh, we have red-tape alrighty, a big roll of it. I was using it for fishing lures but all it caught was catfish, carp, guppies, and other bottom-feeders Wink

Unfortunately at this point in time 3D Planets doesn't have the infrastructure to host the Outers, but we can offer a safe place to host the Worlds without all the headgames, politics, banners, ads, or the aforementioned red-tape.

Hey, thats cool! So... how much does it cost monthlty to provide a free chat server? I think they should add advertising.
Must be from watching the Geisha billboard in Bladerunner
for the 1 millionth time! heheh
I don't mind proper advertisement...matter of fact... Im all for it.
Maybe they should change it a little........
Have you seen TVUnetworks.com ? All they did was put an interface
to a bunch of free tv links...and its genius!
What about something similar for blaxxun..... but browser based.
So...... a few more bells and whistles Cool

We have no advertising, adware, malware, or BarneyWare for that matter in 3D Planets and we intend to keep it that way for as long as possible. Our monthly costs are low and we do all the work ourselves. We run the comm for free because we have fun, it's that simple.

As for bells and whistles you should check our comm out, we have a "few" more than the standard blaxxun comm Wink
